Benalmadena is the name (of Moorish/Arabic origin) of the municipality that covers the 3 areas: ‘Benalmádena Pueblo‘, ‘Benalmádena Costa’ and ‘Arroyo de la Miel’. There are approx. 68,000 registered residents in the area, but in addition there is a large number of visiting holidaymakers in the summer season, and a similarly large number of Northern Europeans who live in the area part-time during the winter, in their own or rented homes. Among them is a large group of permanent Scandinavian residents who have settled in well in the area. And there is a good reason why Benalmádena has so many visitors, because the area really has a lot to offer its guests.
Benalmádena Pueblo is the cosy village, situated in the mountains a little away from the coast – with fantastic views over the coast and the Mediterranean. A town that exudes Spanish charm, Andalusian houses and small, winding streets. This is also where the well-known Danish Montebello is located – and a place where several Danes have chosen to settle, either as regular holiday guests or as residents in the town. Benalmádena Pueblo is also known for the castle ‘Castillo Colomares and the Buddhist Stupa, which is the largest Buddhist temple in Europe. ‘Pueblo’ – as Benalmádena Pueblo is often simply called – also has a really good selection of good eateries, fine restaurants and cosy taverns found throughout the town's charming streets.
Benalmádena Costa is located on the beautiful stretch of coast between Málaga and Fuengirola. This is where you will find the lovely Mediterranean beaches, which attract holidaymakers from all over Europe in the warm summer months. The long and beautifully designed promenade is the ideal place for a walk along the beach – and the place where you will find all types of restaurants, ‘chiringuitos’, bars and small shops. Here on the coast you will also find plenty of hotels and lovely individual holiday homes for rent.
‘Puerto Marina’ is Benalmádena's large and impressive port and marina, which houses large pleasure yachts in the inner harbour – and a wide selection of restaurants and shops on land. The marina offers boat trips out into the bay, as well as short ferry trips to the port of Fuengirola. It is also here at ‘Puerto Marina’ that you will find the large aquarium ‘Sea Life Benalmádena’, which gives visitors the chance to study fish and marine life up close.
Arroyo de la Miel is centrally located between the beach and the mountains, a densely populated area with a more modern feel, and many international holiday homes and holiday apartments. The place is known for the large cable car (‘Teleferico’) that takes you up to the mountain Calamorro behind the town, where you can enjoy an impressive view over the sea and Gibraltar. Between the centre and the beach, you will find the lovely ‘Parque de Paloma’ park – a charming green area with lakes and wildlife in the form of something as exotic as chickens and rabbits. A wonderful place for the whole family, especially the little ones.
Arroyo de la Miel offers excellent gastronomy with both Spanish and international dining experiences, as well as plenty of bars and friendly cafés for an evening out in town. Cosy pedestrian streets in the town centre give plenty of shopping opportunities for keen shoppers. It is also here in Arroyo de la Miel that the local train station connects the coastline between Fuengirola and Málaga, with a direct connection to Málaga's international airport.
Benalmádena has the full package to offer for a wonderful holiday or a longer stay. From village atmosphere in the mountains, to a more modern and international atmosphere in Arroyo de Miel and the lovely life by the beaches in Benalmádena Costa.
